These youngsters are usually unemployed, having either dropped out off college or just because they cannot be arsed to go out and get work. They live rent free at home and do nothing all day to help out their parents, while spending their evenings out drinking, smoking and/or doing drugs and having sex and just partying really. They manage to blag money off their parents to fund their lifestyles and to get by day to day and yet treat their parents ...well like s**t! They have no respect for their parents and swear at them and treat their homes like hotels - and their parents are helpless and these kids get away with it.
This is what I don't get. Why do these parents let their children treat them this way? There is no way in this world that I would have been able to act the same way and get away with it when I was a teenager. I admit that maybe I wasn't actually the rebellious type so it would never have got so bad, but I wouldn't have dared over step the mark with my Mum - the consequences were enough to prevent me from doing anything too terrible! I also respected my parents, and although there were times when I maybe didn't like them very much because I wasn't allowed to go out somewhere, I would never bad mouth them or show them disrespect.
The youngsters featured in these programmes do nothing for our country's image to the rest of the world either. It just shows the British youth in a very bad light and when in the Worlds Strictest Parents programme they go to live with a family abroad, their behaviour is appalling to begin with. It really makes me ashamed sometimes to be British the way these teens - representatives of our nation- act towards their hosts and appear to be just so rude to put it politely!
The recent rioting in our major cities last month also highlighted the state of how bad a lot of our British teens has become. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw our teenagers and young adults - this country's future - rampaging through the streets, causing criminal damage and looting and having no respect for the police or their communities. It was like watching one of those docu-soap style shows.
It was so unbelievable and unforgivable in my opinion. Yet during the riots, when young people were interviewed on the news about their opinions on what was happening, they thought it was great and that it served our country and government right for the cuts that were made in youth services. It was a laugh and just something to do! Like some kind of come-uppence that was due and which Britain deserved.
It really saddens me that our country has come to this. It's like a lot of our youngsters feel the world owes them something, and that they don't need to work because society and their parents will bail them out allowing them to live how they want. Not only do they disrespect their parents and 'the establishment' but I feel they disrespect themselves. Binge drinking and sleeping around recklessly so young is not admirable or clever, but they won't realise this until they are older and reflect back on their teenage years. Being young we don't see the dangers that being older allows us, and at their age many of them don't care anyway!
I just don't understand why things have come to this - whatever happened to make it so?
I would like to point out that I appreciate that not all young people are like this and many are respectful, hard working and full of moral fibre (as my grandparents would say!), it's just such a shame that all we ever tend to see portrayed on the TV are the bad 'uns. I am relieved that by the end of each The Worlds Strictest Parents episode, the wayward teens, upon returning home to their families, are usually ready to make amends and apologise for their former behaviour, and realise that they need to grow up and make changes to their lives. This realisation gives me hope that deep down, beneath the bravado, most teens are basically decent and they just need reminding of this. I also know writing this as a Mum to two very young boys, that they too could end up being future wrong 'uns and I will then be eating my words!!
